No two leaders and no two companies are alike. In different settings and in different times, we all face very different challenges. Sometimes for example, CEOs are called upon to turn a company around, rescue a business that's failed or is failing. Sometimes leaders are involved with startups, turning a great idea into a profitable, growing company which is no small challenge. Sometimes they're asked to midwife a merger, successfully meld different corporate cultures and customer bases. None of those assignments is very easy. But there's another type of leadership challenge that's not always discussed as much and that's taking a company that's large, well-known and respected; a company with a lot of history and success behind it; then take that good company and make it significantly better; take it to the next level; almost from good to great idea. Great name for a book, wouldn't it? That particular set of challenges has its own difficulties. Convincing people that change is necessary, even when the business is profitable and growing, deciding which strategies, which operations, which systems to change and which ones to leave alone.
