The popular theory nowdays seems to be the universe expamding forever. What happens is that about the time the earth was forming the universe actually started to accelerate its expamsion. This is apperantly caused by the vacuum of space actually repeling itself a phenomenon known as dark energy. So most likely it wont collapse.
