I am a 3rd year Microbiology undergrad student. I am very interested in many areas of scientific and philosophical enquiry. I am an avid reader of books and of blogs, mostly on science and discovery. I also spend a lot of time on the internet.

What if something like string theory is the 'holy grail' of physics and it is the true fundamental theory but it can never be tested or verified empirically? Would science have to change? Would we be happy with only mathematical evidence?
